Plaice

ABOUT -
The plaice ( Pleuronectes platessa) is a typical flatfish. It is oval in shape and is right-eyed (if the fish is visualised swimming upright, then both the eyes are on the right side of the body). The upper side is basically brown with numerous, conspicuous orange or red spots.

TEXTURE -
Plaice is a flat fish that hides in sandy sea beds and can be recognised by its smooth grey or brown skin with red spots. Plaice has a moist texture and a delicate, distinctive taste. Plaice has a very fine delicate texture and requires a very gentle touch when cooking.

BONES -
One of the most noticeable differences is that plaice have around seven bony bumps running across the back of the head, from the eyes to the gill cover which is absent on flounder. ... As well as the European plaice there are several other species commonly known as plaice throughout the world.

TASTE -
Plaice is a flat fish with a very sweet and mild flavour. Served battered, this fish goes well with tartare sauce, a squeeze of lemon and some of our tasty chips.
